Reflecting on the Year: Lessons, Wins, and Growth in Your Expert Business

by | Dec 31, 2025 | Inner Work of Business

As the year winds down, it’s natural to feel the pull to pause and reflect. A good year-end business reflection helps you acknowledge the wins, learn from the misses, and step into the next chapter with clarity. Whether your expert business soared, stumbled, or simply survived, there’s gold in looking back.

What Worked in Your Business This Year?

Start here. What worked?

Maybe you launched something new that people actually bought. Maybe your audience grew, even if your revenue didn’t. Maybe you stayed consistent with content, hired help, or learned to say no faster.

Success doesn’t always show up in spreadsheets. It might look like clearer boundaries, better clients, or more time off without guilt.

Make a list. Big or small, all wins count.

What Didn’t Go As Planned?

This isn’t about shame. It’s about clarity.

Maybe a launch flopped. Maybe you ghosted your own newsletter for three months. Maybe you overpromised, undercharged, or burned out hard.

Cool. Now what?

Patterns are easier to shift once you name them. See if you can spot any through-lines. Was it timing, overcommitment, audience mismatch, pricing, energy leaks?

Looking at what didn’t work without flinching is a skill-and a strength. Own it.

Where Did You Grow the Most?

This is the hidden gem of reflection.

Where did you stretch? Did you start charging more? Speak on a stage? Fire a difficult client? Rest more than usual?

Growth in your expert business often starts with personal risk: doing the thing before you felt ready. Let yourself see it.

What Do You Want More (or Less) Of Next Year?

Now you get to steer.

Do you want to double down on a specific offer? Simplify your calendar? Be bolder with your content? Make more space to think?

This isn’t about setting resolutions. It’s about setting rhythm. Let your past year show you what to protect and what to release.

A simple framework:

Keep: What’s working and still feels good?

Let go: What’s draining or done?

Invite in: What do you want to experience more?

Give Yourself Credit

If you’re reading this, you made it through another year of building something from your own mind, experience, and effort. That’s rare air.

Most people never even try.

Your expert business is growing, even if some of that growth is underground for now. Reflection is how you honor the roots before the next bloom.

Here’s to a year that taught you something. And to a new one that lets you use it.

If you want more clarity and not just more goals, my microbook Build What You Want can help. It’s about building an aligned business based on what you really want.
