Stop Setting Sales Goals. Start Building a Revenue System.

by | Feb 9, 2016 | Business Foundations

Every year, countless entrepreneurs set ambitious sales goals.

“I want to double my revenue.”

“I want to reach six figures.”

Or “I want ten new clients every month.”

A few months later, many of those goals feel discouraging rather than motivating. Progress slows, unexpected challenges arise, and it’s easy to wonder whether you’re doing something wrong.

Here’s the shift that changed how I think about business growth:

You can’t directly control your sales.

What you can control are the actions that make sales more likely.

That distinction sits at the heart of Building a Revenue Engine. Sustainable growth isn’t created by hoping for better results. It’s created by consistently building the systems that generate those results over time.

Once I stopped measuring success only by revenue and started paying closer attention to the activities that produced revenue, goal setting became far less stressful and much more effective.

Focus on What You Can Control

Sales are an outcome.

Outcomes matter, but they aren’t entirely within your control.

Potential clients have their own priorities, budgets, timelines, and circumstances. Sometimes the timing simply isn’t right, regardless of how valuable your offer may be.

Your daily actions, however, are completely different.

You can choose to publish another article.

To follow up with a prospective client.

To strengthen a proposal.

And to nurture relationships.

You can ask for referrals.

You can improve your offers.

Those are all investments in future revenue.

Rather than asking, “Did I make a sale today?” ask, “Did I do something today that makes future sales more likely?”

That’s a question you can answer every single day.

Build a Revenue Engine, Not Random Sales

Healthy businesses rarely grow because of isolated moments of luck.

More often, they grow because they have a reliable system that consistently creates opportunities.

Think of revenue as the result of several connected stages.

People discover your work.

They begin to trust your expertise.

Engage with your ideas.

Start conversations.

Some of those conversations become clients.

Many of those clients become repeat customers, referral partners, or enthusiastic advocates.

Each stage strengthens the next.

Instead of obsessing over the final number, look at the system supporting it.

Where are people discovering you?

How are you building trust?

Are you making it easy for someone to take the next step?

Strong revenue systems are built intentionally, not accidentally.

Measure the Behaviors That Drive Growth

One of the most encouraging shifts you can make is to measure your leading indicators instead of focusing exclusively on lagging results.

Revenue tells you what already happened.

Your daily actions tell you what you’re creating next.

Meaningful metrics might include:

  • Discovery conversations you’ve had.
  • Thoughtful articles or newsletters you’ve published.
  • Proposals you’ve sent.
  • Follow-up conversations you’ve completed.
  • Referral requests you’ve made.
  • Strategic partnerships you’ve developed.

Every one of these activities increases the likelihood of future business.

They also provide something incredibly valuable.

Momentum.

Even before revenue changes, you’ll often see these indicators improving first.

Build Goals from Real Numbers

Ambitious goals are inspiring.

Grounded goals are actionable.

Instead of choosing an arbitrary revenue target, begin with the numbers you already know.

What’s your average client value?

  1. How many discovery conversations typically lead to a proposal?
  2. How many proposals become clients?
  3. How many clients return for additional work?

Which marketing activities consistently generate your best opportunities?

Answers like these transform goal setting from wishful thinking into thoughtful planning.

Better still, they reveal where small improvements can create significant results.

Sometimes increasing your follow-up rate or improving your client retention has a much greater impact than simply trying to find more leads.

Celebrate Consistency, Not Just Outcomes

Entrepreneurship has a way of making us believe that only finished results deserve recognition.

I don’t think that’s true anymore.

Progress deserves celebration too.

One practice I’ve continued over the years is turning important business activities into a simple game.

Every meaningful action earns points.

Publishing an article.

Following up with a prospect.

Making an offer.

Having a discovery conversation.

Reaching out to a referral partner.

When I reach my weekly goal, I celebrate the consistency rather than waiting for revenue alone to validate my efforts.

That shift keeps motivation much steadier because it recognizes the behaviors that eventually create business growth.

Sustainable Revenue Is Built Long Before the Sale

The sale itself is simply the visible outcome.

The real work happens much earlier.

It begins with becoming discoverable.

It grows through trust.

And it deepens through valuable ideas, meaningful conversations, and consistent follow-through.

By the time someone decides to work with you, much of the work has already been done.

That’s why I no longer think of sales goals as the primary objective.

Instead, I focus on strengthening the system that makes sales possible.

Revenue follows.

Not every week.

Not always on your preferred timeline.

But with thoughtful strategy, consistent action, and a business built on trust rather than pressure, sustainable growth becomes far more predictable.

That’s a goal worth pursuing.
