One of the greatest benefits of having your own business is being able to choose who you work with. Just remember that, sometimes, a client will offer to pay you a lot of money- and this still isn’t enough. Let me give you an example: recently, I was contacted by a potential client who wanted to find out if I’d coach him. As I usually do, I asked a few questions through email and suggested we find a time to chat briefly by phone. Well, he cancelled the first session with little notice- which didn’t sit well with me- but he did make it to the rescheduled meeting. As we got on the phone, I noticed that he tended to interrupt me, wasn’t really listening well, and, after about 10 minutes, I noticed that I was getting a headache in trying to move our conversation along. He was difficult to follow and felt disorganized. As we wound down our call, he said that he’d like to work with me, and offered to pay 1.5x my usual fee if I’d get started with him right away. While the money was tempting… I had to realize that spending just 10 minutes with him gave me a headache… so it was likely I wasn’t the best person to assist him. I helped him get connected with another person who might be a better match for him. I share this story because, sometimes, we need to make tough decisions about who to work with. In some cases, no amount of money would be enough. When you get this feeling in your own business, learn to honor it- saving yourself time, energy, and bad feelings in the process.
