How do you find your target audience when the internet feels like a noisy cocktail party where everyone’s shouting and no one’s really listening?

That question keeps creatives and entrepreneurs stuck on a loop of posting more, tweaking endlessly, and hoping someone, somewhere, will finally respond.

When you're building a brand with depth and meaning, the phrase “know your audience” isn’t just marketing advice - it’s survival.

So where do you begin?

You start by listening differently.

Because your right people aren’t “out there,” waiting to be hunted down. They’re already having conversations - sometimes quietly, sometimes in plain sight. Your job is to become the person they recognize as for them.

1. Clarity before connection

Most people try to find their audience by posting more, promoting harder, or tweaking tactics. But the real question isn’t just who is your audience. It’s what are you inviting them into?

Get deeply clear on:

  • What problem you solve (and why it matters)
  • Who it truly matters to (not just who might pay)
  • What transformation your work offers

This clarity is not theoretical. It’s emotional. It has to resonate. Because when your offer has emotional clarity, your audience becomes easier to recognize - and easier to reach.

Before you ask “Where do I find them?”, ask: Would they feel seen by what I’m saying?

2. Study the emotional arc, not just the demographics

Age, gender, job title -  those are outer-layer answers. Real resonance comes when you map the inner world of your people.

Ask yourself:

  • What are they wrestling with in the privacy of their minds?
  • What story do they believe about what’s possible?
  • What do they wish someone would finally help them name?

Your true audience shares a narrative, not just a niche. They’re on a journey - and your work is a turning point.

If you can articulate the emotional arc they’re on - the before, the shift, the after -  you don’t have to push to get attention. You become a mirror. A moment of relief. A voice that makes them feel less alone.

3. Be findable by being distinct

Trying to appeal to everyone is the fastest way to become invisible.

The most magnetic brands aren’t loud - they’re specific. They name the thing others only circle around. They say the line that makes someone pause and think, Finally, someone said it.

That kind of specificity only comes when you stop filtering yourself through what you think will “perform.” Your real audience isn’t waiting for perfection. They’re waiting for truth, told with skill.

The more distinct your voice, the more clearly your right people can say: That. That’s what I’ve been looking for.

4. Go where the conversations are already happening

Your people are not hiding - they’re gathering.

Not always in obvious places. Sometimes in Slack channels or Substacks, sometimes in comment sections or quiet DMs. Sometimes in books, podcasts, or even offscreen communities.

Where are they asking questions? Venting? Celebrating tiny wins?

Don’t drop in just to sell. Linger to listen. And when you do join the conversation, bring something of value: a new insight, a gentle reframe, a moment of clarity.

This is how visibility becomes belonging. And that’s what builds long-term trust.

5. Audience is a relationship, not a category

You don’t just find your audience. You build a relationship with them.

Which means this isn’t a one-and-done process. It’s a conversation that deepens over time. A rhythm of showing up, listening, adjusting, and staying rooted in what’s true.

Here’s what that often looks like:

  • You speak clearly, even if few are listening at first
  • You refine as you go, based on real feedback
  • You honor the humans behind the “data”

Finding your audience is not about performance metrics. It’s about alignment. And when you build from alignment, what you create lands deeper - and lasts longer.

Want to find your right audience - without the guesswork, second-guessing, or generic templates?

That’s exactly why I created The Right Audience - a course for experts, entrepreneurs and creatives who are tired of broadcasting into the void and ready to attract people who get them.

Inside, you’ll learn:

How to identify the emotional arc your audience is already on

How to craft messaging that resonates with the right people (and repels the wrong ones)

How to become findable, trusted, and known -  without becoming someone you’re not

You don’t have to go wider. You have to go truer.

So the next time you find yourself asking, How do you find your target audience?, pause and ask instead:

What truth am I telling?
Who is already longing for that truth?
And how can I meet them with care, clarity, and conviction?

That’s when your audience starts to feel less like a mystery - and more like a community coming into focus.
